A County Commissioner serves as part of the Commissioners Court and does not act independently. Commissioners vote on the county budget and tax rate, approve contracts and spending, set county policies, and oversee roads and infrastructure within their precinct. They also represent residents by bringing local concerns to the court and helping guide decisions that affect the entire county.

County Commissioners vote on the county tax rate as part of the Commissioners Court, but they do not set property values. An independent appraisal district determines appraisals, and the court’s role is to balance the county's needs with the taxpayer impact.
